Friends! I am so excited to share my latest York Pinafore with you AND to let you know that I am teaching a sewing class! WOOOOOO. From interacting with folks in both online and in real life, it has really become more and more apparent to me how important it is to make sure that sewing is a safe and inclusive space, and I decided it was time for me to do something about it. I want to create a sewing space where everyone feels welcome. My classes will be body positive and focus on fixing the clothes to fit our bodies, rather than trying to alter our bodies to fit our clothes. I’m happy to be working with Hip Stitch in Albuquerque on this project, as it is a store full of fabulous people ready to embrace sewers of all sizes. They have been incredibly supportive of my message (and they look darn fabulous in my clothes too… see evidence at the end of the post!).
I thought long and hard about what pattern I wanted to teach, but I settled on the Helen’s Closet York Pinafore. I think it has the largest span of sizes of nearly any pattern company (0-30) and will be a great first garment project. I hope it will also appeal to sewers of all ages!
This class is designed for the beginner garment sewer, someone who has a solid knowledge of how their machine works from either quilting or crafting projects, but wants to get into garment sewing. We will focus on taking accurate body measurements and using those to interpret size charts. We will learn some basic fitting techniques and maybe even get the chance to do some fitting on the fly. Plus, everyone will walk away with a fabulous new pinafore.
This first class will be held on June 15th from 11am to 4pm. Interested? All the details can be found here, including how to register. Please reach out to me with any questions or if you have ideas for patterns you would like to see in future classes (or if you would like a second chance to sew the York if this date doesn’t work for you). If you have any concern that the pattern won’t fit you, I am happy to grade it up or down in size, just shoot me an email. Additionally, you are welcome to sew the Apron Version if a pinafore isn’t your cup of tea.
Now… on to my latest pinafore! All my fit details are in my previous York post, I sewed this one nearly exactly the same. The one small change I made was to add a slight bit of width at the center front when I was cutting to account for my slight change in hip width since the last version I sewed. I used the kangaroo pocket, but I’m kinda regretting it. I think I like the rounded pockets better.
This is in a fabulous Essex Linen from Hip Stitch and was sewn as a class sample. Stop by the store to try it on if you would like. I am so thrilled to be able to provide a sample for a store in a larger size, I have never been able to walk into a store and try on a pattern, so please enjoy it if you can!

Just the Facts:
Pattern: York Pinafore from Helen’s Closet
Current Measurements: Bust: 45″, Waist 42″, Hip 53″
Size: 20-22-24 with an inch-ish added at center front when cutting.
Fabric/Notions:Essex Linen from Hip Stitch, I made the bias tape this time
All the class details can be found here!
This pattern was provided to me in exchange for my pattern testing services.
I’ve taught people to sew one-on-one but a class is definitely a better idea! I hope you and your students all have a great experience. 🙂

Thank you! I’ve been working with some teens at my local YMCA teen center and that has been fun, but I’m excited to work with adults now too!

Congratulations on starting to teach sewing! I think you’ve got a great angle at it being a body-positive class. Also your pinafore looks amazing, especially in this colour!
